Home sleep studies can be used to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea in some adults. They may also be ordered to measure theeffectiveness of a current apnea treatment such as a dental appliance or PAP therapy. The device measures airflow, abdominal effort, heart rate, and oxygen saturation. While this study can be conducted in the patients’ own home at the fraction of the cost of an in-lab study, it is also administered by the patient and therefore up to the patient to properly attach all sensors to achieve anaccurate reading.
If the patient feels comfortable and the physician deems this type of study ideal, the patient will be scheduled to meet with a trained staff member at our office. They will be instructed on how to properly attached the sensors and operate the recording device. The patient will return the device the following day. A technician will score the recording for the physician to analyze.
